Forest and Environment News:

Suspension of Softwood Talks – The B.C. government supported the federal government’s decision not to go ahead with meetings with U.S. government officials on Aug. 22 regarding the softwood lumber dispute. Canada and the provinces will continue to monitor the U.S. response before deciding on next steps. See Softwood Talks

Local Government News:

Canada's Kyoto Commitment – The Federal Government has issued a consultation paper stemming from the "Moving Forward on Climate Change: A Plan to Honour Our Kyoto Commitment" plan. Public comments continue to be invited until Sept. 30, 2005. It is expected that the system will begin operating early in 2006. The proposed system will encourage innovative Canadian projects that use new practices and technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Companies and communities will then be awarded credits. Economic Opportunities in Rural B.C. – Western Economic Diversification Canada will be funding 31 projects which will benefit 35 communities across B.C. Working primarily through its network of Community Futures Development Corporations, rural communities will have an opportunity for future sustainable economic growth. See Funding for Rural Areas.

High Gas Taxes: comments from the Prime Minister – Despite increasing gas prices, Prime Minister Paul Martin said that the government will not reduce Ottawa's take at the pumps because municipalities are already counting on this money. The Prime Minister made the remarks in Edmonton following a meeting with the Canada West Foundation, a think tank focused on bringing a western perspective to public policy.
