Forest and Environment News: U.S. Finally Determines Canadian Softwood Not Subsidized: One Step Toward Resolution On November 22, 2005, it was reported that the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has finally issued a determination on countervailing duties that supports Canada’s long-standing position that Canadian softwood lumber is not subsidized. The remand determination of 0.80 percent by the DOC was in response to the NAFTA panel’s fifth request that the DOC correct its subsidy determination—previously reduced by the DOC from 18.79 percent to 1.21 percent. Canadian exporters continue to pay an unjustified 20.15 percent duty on softwood lumber shipped to the U.S. Since 2002, some $5 billion in duties has been collected illegally. Take a look at these sites for more information: BC Lumber Trade Council; Government of Canada; Government of BC Funding To Advance Beetle-Wood Research And Development It was announced recently that the Province will be investing nearly $730,000 in 13 projects to develop new products and uses for mountain pine beetle-wood. The projects each determine how beetle-attacked timber can be used to its fullest potential by testing its viability in a variety of product applications such as laminated decking and flooring, structural panels and particleboard, structural beams made of laminated wood, and other products. Initial results will be reported in spring 2006. For more information, see Mountain Pine Beetle Information. Province Launches New Tool In Battling Invasive Plants It was recently announced that the Province has launched Canada’s first web-based tool in the battle against invasive alien plants. The Invasive Alien Plants Program is a web-based data entry system and mapping tool which will allow people working in government, industry and local weed committees to quickly and efficiently share information about where invasive plants are located, and what weed control treatments have been used. By sharing data, the agencies involved in invasive plant management will be able to prioritize work across B.C., prevent duplicated efforts and measure progress. The Invasive Alien Plant Program Application which the public may access, is available online. | ||||||||
